I spent the last few days cleaning up the Hellebores before they get busy blooming. I cut back all the ratty foliage and raked off any excessive mulch from leaf fall to make room for all the fresh, new growth. I can’t wait until they fill our woods with their beautiful faces. It’s looking like it will be a pretty productive year for them.

✨

This variety is from the Ice N Roses series. The flowers are huge and clearly stunning ! We will be offering them at our Spring Plant Sale which begins March 27th (virtually, just like last year). Be sure to mark your calendar and start getting your garden ready. We will have all your veggie and flower starts as well as all kinds of easy to grow seeds to offer y’all🌱

It’s that time of year when we start getting questions from new farmers asking our opinion about what we think they need to invest in in order to be ‘successful’ . Figured i would just put it all out here for ya in case it’s helpful. Just remember EVEry farm and situation is different. What works for us might not be the best thing for you. This list is in order of priority for us for starting out. At this point, we couldn’t do without any of these things I’m about to mention. But it took years to acquire these things so keep that in mind too.

✨

1- Walk-in cooler ... in our hot climate, this was the very first thing we invested in. And i strongly suggest you do the same if you are in a warm climate. Pretty much every veggie (minus tomatoes) and every flower needs to be cooled down as soon as it comes out of the field. Degradation begins the second you harvest. By quickly taking the field heat out of the product, you extend shelf life exponentially. The last thing you want to do is work yourself to the bone only to have your product melt bf it gets to market or have your customers disappointed by its short shelf life. We recommend building your cooler as insulated as possible . Do not skimp on that step. A poorly insulated cooler will cost you a FORTunE ! Get a CoolBot for your cooling system. One of our walkins that Steve built super insulated cost $17/month running full time in the dead of summer.

✨

2- Tractor. We worked our land for 3 years with a BCS walk behind tiller. We were sooo grateful for it. It served us well. But we knew in order to become more efficient and to save our bodies we needed to eventually step up to a tractor. It was our scariest purchase to date...and the only vehicle we have ever purchased new. As you can see, we have a small tractor. But that’s all we needed. We have a small farm. Anything bigger would actually be too big...and way more expensive. We got ours from John Deere with a 5 year no interest plan. It also came with 2 free implements. We got the tiller and bucket. Two things I could never image being without now.

Every New Year, Steve and I hop on the bus that’s parked in our field to get clear about the year ahead. This veggie oil powered bus is how Steve and I first met back in 2003 when he and his friends came cruising through Athens doing a sustainability tour to colleges around the country. This bus is basically a vessel of collective good energy. Many intentions and dreams have been composed in this space (raise your hand if you’ve experienced the magical power of Unifried). It reminds us of our original intentions of how we want to live our life . There is no better place to discuss our personal + business dreams and goals....and we have plenty !

✨

We lay a year’s worth of ideas all out on the table, brainstorm ways to make these dreams a reality, then pick it to pieces to see what we can actually make happen...always keeping in mind that our friendship w/ each other comes first above all else. This day is essential for us.

✨

This past year, Everything changed for our business . We had a year like none of us could have ever planned for. Never in a million years did we think we’d be shipping our flowers, or have to live separately for months, stop going to 3 farmers markets, have a CSA, or a Farm Store. I swear, just as we thought we finally had our systems dialed in, the world completely changed. All of these changes though have broadened our perspective on what’s possible. We now have new plans and new goals...and honestly, as someone who gets bored with routine quite quickly, it’s kinda refreshing to change it up a bit. 2020 was a dark cloud, but we did find some silver linings.

✨

Without your support and belief in us, we would have drowned last year! Y’all have given us the courage to open our minds + spread our wings. Shortly, we will be rolling out our year at a glance and fill you in on all the details. Our website is currently getting a massive overhaul (HUGE thanks to @heliumadvisory for making that happen!) We hope to be able to reach many more of you this next season and spread the beauty that pours out of our fields and get them into your hands. Stay Tuned ! We can’t wait to share it all with you !

✨

Peace + Love 🤍

All 7 tunnels are officially planted for Spring ☀️

A pic from a few weeks back in the Farm Store. Honestly, I’ve been so busy farming that I haven’t been focused on taking many photos to entice y’all to come over to shop...but y’all have been making appts regardless so Thank You !!

✨

For those still needing to grab a few things for gift giving or for yourself, we will be open every day this week thru Saturday. After this Saturday, we will be closing the store until Valentine’s Day while we focus on gearing up for our busiest season, Spring. We have more flowers planted than ever and we sure can’t wait to share them with you. For those wondering, we will continue to ship our flowers so get those vases ready. It won’t be long before we are flooding you with flowers again.

✨

Big thanks to everyone who has purchased our Wreath Making video ! It has been a wild success. And y’all have been so sweet to send us rave reviews and images of your creations ! It has definitely been a highlight of this month. For those still interested, the video is available on our website (link in profile). It will make a great gift for that creative/wanna-be creative in your life...or if you just need a project to do with your family. The video is available to watch right away and you will have lifetime access to it.

✨

Last tidbit: Don’t forget to make an appt bf coming out to the Farm Store. You will have your very own 30 minute time slot to shop all by yourself. Bring your mask still cause it’s required. #safetyfirst
